A leading consumables company identified an opportunity to grow Valentine’s Day sales by expanding beyond traditional romantic gifting. They wanted to better understand the needs, motivations and frustrations of shoppers seeking to give “gifts of appreciation” for friends, family and coworkers – not just “gifts of love”. The ultimate objective was to generate a range of compelling new product concepts that appealed to this overlooked audience.
We used a multi-phase approach to uncover and prioritize Insight Platforms that could inspire new product ideas - ensuring concepts were refined and validated prior to launch. The process began with ethnographic research to explore what consumers really want, need and struggle with when shopping during Valentine’s season. From there, we developed unique insight platforms that captured those needs and desires.
Next, we collaborated with the client’s team, our internal experts and creative partners in ideation sessions to generate a wide variety of product concepts. Finally, we rigorously tested and refined the strongest ideas to make sure they resonated – and only the best moved forward into the client’s launch pipeline.
In the seasons that followed, our client launched several consumer-driven products designed specifically for “gifts of appreciation” – opening up a new, incremental sales stream alongside the classic “gifts of love.”
